64) Nosferatu

Nosferatu is a 1922 silent horror film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, and Greta Schröder. It was loosely based on Dracula by Bram Stoker.

[00:00:28] Hello, welcome back to Casabloga. This is the Halloween episode, and I will be talking about Nosferatu, which is a 1922 silent horror film directed by F.W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck, Gustav von Wagenham, and Greta Schroeder.

[00:00:53] I thought I had those names. There was one that I could, nah. Anyway, this is a classic. I've seen it so many times. I technically didn't even need to watch it this time, but I saw it on Blu-ray a few months back, and I was like, you know what?

[00:01:13] You know, the fact that I found it on Blu-ray months ago is the reason that it's the Halloween episode this year. I saw it, and I was like, I have to get it.

[00:01:22] And then I was like, I want to watch it now. No, wait, I'm going to hold off on that. I want to watch it now. Nah, hold off on that.

[00:01:29] I know when to watch it. I know when to watch it. And then, yeah, I made it the Halloween episode. I spent more time on this than I thought I would. Anyway, so the story of this, it's basically Dracula, but not.

[00:01:46] But not, because like the names and, you know, places and story kind of has been changed.

[00:02:00] It's actually kind of an interesting story. They could actually make a movie about the making of Natsveratu itself, and it would be really interesting.

[00:02:10] Because there's a reason that it's similar to Dracula. It was actually an unofficial Dracula movie.

[00:02:20] It was loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula. And, yeah, when, because Bram Stoker had passed away at this point, and his widow found out about it.

[00:02:37] And she wanted the royalties, and so she sued them for the royalties. And they were like, yep, no, we don't like that.

[00:02:43] And so they fought it, and they lost.

[00:02:47] And so she ordered all copies to be destroyed.

[00:02:53] And they were, and that's why we've never seen this movie. It's a lost film.

[00:02:59] Okay, obviously, that's not true.

[00:03:03] She waited too long, I think, because by then the film had already been sent out to, like, different theaters, and people had it.

[00:03:11] And, yeah, good luck with that.

[00:03:15] But, honestly, I'm glad she waited too long, because we, it would have been a lost film, but we'd never heard of it.

[00:03:21] Oh, if we did hear about it, it would be some footnote in film history that, like, one of the diehards would have heard of.

[00:03:27] It's like, oh, remember when this German director tried to rip off Dracula?

[00:03:31] Haha, that would have been funny.

[00:03:33] No, but actually, it's a really good thing this movie survived.

[00:03:38] Not just because it's a classic and it's a great movie, but also because, well, it's a very important one, too.

[00:03:46] This film is, it is a horror film, and it actually is.

[00:03:52] It's just, it's, even now, like, it's kind of a haunt, like, a terrifying movie.

[00:03:59] And I, um, well, it's funny, it's like, I'll tell people, oh, yeah, Nosferatu, it's one of the, like, a really scary silent film.

[00:04:08] And they're like, scary silent film, isn't that an axiomodon?

[00:04:11] Like, you've gotta see it.

[00:04:14] And, you know, last year I did the episode on The Wind.

[00:04:18] It was a silent film.

[00:04:19] And I basically made it an episode about silent films, so I'm not gonna do that again.

[00:04:24] But basically, I could go on and on about silent films and why I wish people would give them a chance.

[00:04:30] They are really interesting and really good.

[00:04:33] But I did that last year, not gonna do it this year.

[00:04:37] There was a movie I recommend.

[00:04:39] And it came out in 2000.

[00:04:42] It's called Shadow of the Vampire.

[00:04:46] It's inspired by, uh, a rumor.

[00:04:50] It's obviously not true.

[00:04:52] The, cause, like, there was a lot of mystery surrounding Max Schreck, who was the, the, I was gonna say the voice of Nosferatu.

[00:04:59] But he played Nosferatu, um, Count Orlok, in the movie.

[00:05:04] And there was a lot of mystery surrounding him in real life.

[00:05:09] And so, in the movie, uh, Shadow of the Vampire.

[00:05:14] It, it's a very fictionalized version of the making of Nosferatu.

[00:05:20] Where it turns out Max Schreck is actually a vampire.

[00:05:26] And, and, he is played by William Dafoe.

[00:05:32] And, and, Murnau, the director, is played by John Malkovich.

[00:05:37] So, like, I've, I saw it, like, ten years ago.

[00:05:39] And I thought it was really interesting.

[00:05:41] I liked it.

[00:05:43] Unfortunately, it's not streaming anywhere.

[00:05:45] You'd have to rent it on Amazon.

[00:05:48] It, I, I used the Watch This app to find out where, where stuff is streaming.

[00:05:54] And it says, Prime Video as a subscription.

[00:05:59] No, as a, as a rent, as a rental.

[00:06:02] It is a subscription service.

[00:06:04] But, not all the movies on there are available for rent.

[00:06:09] Sometimes you have to rent.

[00:06:10] No, wow.

[00:06:11] Some of them aren't available for streaming.

[00:06:13] Some of them you have to rent.

[00:06:15] Some of them you can buy.

[00:06:17] Shadow of the Vampire is one that you could rent or buy.

[00:06:19] But you can't stream it.

[00:06:21] Well, you could stream it once you buy it.

[00:06:22] But, you can't stream it without buying it.

[00:06:26] Or renting it.

[00:06:27] You know what I mean.

[00:06:29] Oh, yeah.

[00:06:32] So, the, this film has had several remakes over the years.

[00:06:36] Well, not several.

[00:06:37] It's had at least, at least one.

[00:06:41] And I saw that one long ago.

[00:06:44] And, I did not like it.

[00:06:46] It was awful.

[00:06:46] It was a 70, it came out in the 70s.

[00:06:49] And it was, I did not like it at all.

[00:06:51] So, and I heard that they were doing a remake.

[00:06:54] Another remake.

[00:06:56] And I was like, oh no.

[00:06:58] Why are you going to do this?

[00:06:59] Why are you going to do a remake of Nosferatu?

[00:07:01] Just re-release it.

[00:07:03] Again.

[00:07:04] And, and I realized that it was going to be directed by Roger Yeagers.

[00:07:10] And I was like, okay, you have my attention.

[00:07:12] If that name doesn't sound familiar, he directed The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and now he's going to direct Nosferatu.

[00:07:25] And then, when the trailer came out, I was like, okay, you really have my attention.

[00:07:32] This actually kind of looks good.

[00:07:34] I am looking forward to this.

[00:07:36] The only thing I don't like about it at this point is that it's releasing Christmas Day.

[00:07:43] Why are you releasing Nosferatu on Christmas Day?

[00:07:48] Why not October?

[00:07:50] This doesn't make any sense to me.

[00:07:54] But I will say that they're doing something good in the, the trailers.

[00:08:01] And they're not really showing us Nosferatu.

[00:08:07] I was getting a little concerned.

[00:08:12] Because, like, well, first off, they're not showing us.

[00:08:14] Why are they not, what are they not showing us?

[00:08:18] And then I realized who was playing Nosferatu.

[00:08:23] And now I'm not really that worried.

[00:08:27] Because Count Orlok is going to be played by Bill Skarsgård.

[00:08:34] Who played Pennywise.

[00:08:38] And, yes, he did have a bad movie come out this year.

[00:08:41] He played, um, I mean, I had a similar scenario with him this year.

[00:08:49] Where, when they announced the Crow remake, I was like, stop, don't do a remake.

[00:08:54] It's gonna be awful.

[00:08:56] And then they said, Bill Skarsgård is gonna play him.

[00:08:59] And I'm like, okay, this might work.

[00:09:01] And then I saw that trailer.

[00:09:03] And I'm like, okay, maybe not.

[00:09:06] But, like, he doesn't have a whole lot of bad movies.

[00:09:10] What are the odds?

[00:09:11] It happens twice in a row.

[00:09:14] I'm just gonna hot out hope that this is a good movie.

[00:09:16] I'm not gonna, I'm going to try not to compare it to the original.

[00:09:20] But it's gonna be really hard.

[00:09:22] When it's something like this.

[00:09:24] Imagine they did a remake of Back to the Future.

[00:09:28] Normally, when I go in to see a remake, I try, it's like, this is its own thing.

[00:09:33] It's, you know, don't think of the original.

[00:09:36] Think of this one as its own thing.

[00:09:38] But Nachiratu is, like, such an iconic movie.

[00:09:42] You're gonna go in.

[00:09:43] There's no way to not compare it.

[00:09:47] I am looking forward to it.

[00:09:49] I do plan to see it the day it comes out.

[00:09:54] And I, obviously, I won't do an episode of that one.

[00:09:59] Obviously.

[00:10:00] Because it will, there will be one episode left of the year when that movie comes out.

[00:10:10] Of this show, obviously.

[00:10:15] So, I'm looking at where to stream Nachiratu.

[00:10:18] You can stream it on Prime Video, AMC+, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, Vudu, Tobe, Canopy, Crackle, SX, Pluto TV, Shout TV, Plex, Freevi, pretty much everything.

[00:10:44] Oh, Kino Film!

[00:10:46] You subscribe.

[00:10:48] You can subscribe to Kino Film.

[00:10:51] Kino, they do the, like, a bunch of old movies.

[00:10:55] And so, I didn't even look at that.

[00:10:58] So, you can basically stream it everywhere.

[00:11:03] However, I will say that you don't need a streaming service to watch this.

[00:11:08] It is in the public domain.

[00:11:11] It is on YouTube.

[00:11:12] In fact, I just looked it up on YouTube.

[00:11:14] There are so many results of the full movie.

[00:11:18] And I know from looking in the past that most of these, because it's in the public domain and people know, oh, I can post this.

[00:11:27] I can do whatever I want with it, basically.

[00:11:29] They'll make their own music.

[00:11:31] And I saw a version of Nachiratu with rock music specifically made for this movie.

[00:11:38] And it was really cool.

[00:11:41] And I honestly encourage that.

[00:11:45] That is really nice.

[00:11:47] It's like once, um, once the Steamboat really, it's like once Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, there was all these different videos.

[00:11:58] Most of them were memes or jokes and remixes.

[00:12:01] But I did see a few where people, like, added sound.

[00:12:08] Or, like, had him speak.

[00:12:10] Or, like, did new music.

[00:12:11] No, did something creative with it that wasn't meant to be.

[00:12:14] Oh, look at this funny thing I did, huh?

[00:12:16] I made him swear.

[00:12:18] But this was, this is creative.

[00:12:20] Adding original music to Nachiratu.

[00:12:25] And so, if you don't like the music that comes on the Blu-ray, which, I like the music that comes on the Blu-ray.

[00:12:32] It was, I don't know if it's based on the original music written for the movie.

[00:12:38] Or if it was, you know, it's a modern take on it or something.

[00:12:43] But it seems to go well with the movie.

[00:12:46] And I, I like it.

[00:12:49] But there's pretty much a Nosferatu for every genre, basically.

[00:12:58] Because they have one with all sorts of music.

[00:13:04] Like, I keep pointing out.

[00:13:05] And my favorite alternate version was the one with rock music.

[00:13:09] And that was really cool.

[00:13:14] So, if you don't want to pay for a streaming service, you don't have to.

[00:13:18] Just go on YouTube.

[00:13:19] And cut.

[00:13:23] And cut.
