75) New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is a 2011 film directed by Garry Marshall, written by Katherine Fugate, and starring Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jon Bon Jovi, and Michelle Pfeiffer. It has a massive ensemble cast with multiple stories going on at once.

[00:00:29] Welcome back to Casabloga, the final full episode of 2024 and Season 3 of Casabloga.

[00:00:38] And for this episode, I am covering New Year's Eve, which is a 2011 film directed by Gary Marshall,

[00:00:47] written by Katherine Fugate, and starring a massive ensemble cast, which features the

[00:00:54] likes of Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jon Bon Jovi, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashton Kutcher,

[00:01:02] Leah Mitchell, and so many more.

[00:01:06] I, for a long time, this was my New Year's Eve movie.

[00:01:13] There was a time when I remembered exactly what time to start this movie for the in-movie

[00:01:22] countdown to be the real-life countdown, and I don't remember what that time is anymore.

[00:01:27] I forgot why I stopped watching this every year, but yeah, I only did it for like six years,

[00:01:37] and I should start again, though not this year, because I don't like watching movies over and

[00:01:44] over again.

[00:01:45] It's like I just watched New Year's Eve, and New Year's is in like a couple months, or a month,

[00:01:53] I don't know.

[00:01:55] But I don't want to watch it this soon.

[00:01:57] I will do it next New Year's Eve.

[00:02:02] Maybe.

[00:02:03] I don't know.

[00:02:03] Unless I forget, which I most likely will forget.

[00:02:08] But it is streaming on Hulu, and I do highly recommend it.

[00:02:13] I'm not going to spoil a whole lot of things in this movie, but I will say I love this kind

[00:02:20] of movie.

[00:02:22] It's one of those with like a big ensemble cast, with multiple stories going on, where

[00:02:28] I'm talking like Love Actually, and movies like that.

[00:02:32] And like this one has like multiple stories going on, and like the characters are connected.

[00:02:40] Like they're all connected somehow.

[00:02:42] And I love how like in all of these movies, which this is like a spiritual sequel to Valentine's

[00:02:51] Day, which it's not a sequel, but it's made by, that one is also Gary Marshall, and Catherine

[00:03:00] and Fugate.

[00:03:02] And so like it's, it's like a sequel, but it's not connected.

[00:03:09] Which, that would just make it more complicated, because each of the, like every time they do

[00:03:13] a movie like this, and every time they do a movie like this, where there's like multiple

[00:03:21] stories, huge ensemble cast, which I keep saying, and I'll probably keep saying throughout this

[00:03:25] episode, they get very complicated, and they, like as the film goes on, especially near the

[00:03:35] end, you find out that these two random characters that you've never seen interact are related

[00:03:42] somehow.

[00:03:42] Or like, or like the brother and sister, or father and son, or something.

[00:03:49] And, and it's always, I've always loved these, how they, they're able to tell multiple stories,

[00:04:02] and keep it make sense.

[00:04:05] I'm not good at words.

[00:04:07] What I would like, though, would be for there to be a TV show.

[00:04:17] I'm pretty sure there is, I'm pretty sure there is like a TV show based around this.

[00:04:24] Not like specifically like this movie, like the premise, like multiple stories going on at

[00:04:29] once are all interconnected.

[00:04:30] I don't know, actually, now that I think about it.

[00:04:35] It's easy enough to follow for a movie, but if they do it as a show, I think that would get too much.

[00:04:40] So, maybe not do that as a show.

[00:04:44] Now, the thing that stood out most to me when I was watching it, the first time, when it first came out,

[00:04:51] 13 years ago, I hate that, is, uh, I wasn't expecting, uh, Jon Bon Jovi to be acting in this.

[00:05:01] I saw him, I said he was listed as, as one of the stars, and it says like, he's a rocker.

[00:05:08] I'm like, oh, he's playing himself.

[00:05:10] He's just gonna like go on stage and like, hi, I'm gonna sing a couple songs.

[00:05:13] And it's, no, no, he's a character.

[00:05:15] He's a character named Jinton.

[00:05:17] And he has like a full arc, and, uh, he's different.

[00:05:24] And he's got a story, and he's acting.

[00:05:26] And I was like, oh, I didn't expect that.

[00:05:28] But, uh, he is basically playing himself though, so it's, it's, is it, is it, is it acting if

[00:05:36] you're just playing yourself?

[00:05:38] I'm gonna go ahead and say yeah, because Aubrey Plaza basically plays herself, and she's one

[00:05:43] of my favorite actors, so.

[00:05:44] Yeah, if, if playing yourself isn't acting, then what's Aubrey Plaza doing?

[00:05:52] She's acting.

[00:05:53] Okay.

[00:05:58] She's not in this movie.

[00:05:59] I, uh.

[00:06:02] And like, while I was watching it this time, I was thinking, oh, the most random cameo of

[00:06:07] the movie was Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

[00:06:11] He makes a cameo appearance at the end.

[00:06:14] But like, now that I think about it, kind of in retrospect, it's not really all that random

[00:06:19] because it's, it takes place in Times Square, New Year's Eve, and they even get, like, they,

[00:06:28] cause Ryan, I was gonna say Ryan Gosling, Ryan Seacrest, who hosts the Dick Clark special,

[00:06:34] it's now just the Ryan Seacrest special, New Year's bash thing.

[00:06:41] And they got him to basically play himself, he's, uh, doing that.

[00:06:48] So, they went all out to kind of make this, like, a real, I don't, I kind of wonder how

[00:06:53] they filmed this.

[00:06:54] Did they, like, film a real New Year's thing?

[00:06:57] And then just, like, build scenes around that?

[00:07:01] I don't know.

[00:07:03] But, it kind of makes sense to have Michael Bloomberg there, cause he was the mayor at

[00:07:09] the time.

[00:07:11] I don't want to say too much about this movie, because, like, I don't want to give anything

[00:07:15] away.

[00:07:15] Like, it's, it's one of those, it's like, it's best to go in blind, because I, I, cause

[00:07:23] like, I like, like how I had said, like, a lot of these movies have, like, unexpected

[00:07:32] connections as the movie goes on.

[00:07:34] And I feel like if I keep talking about it, I'm like, and then, and then you find out

[00:07:38] that, that this person is actually the daughter of this person.

[00:07:42] And then, and, and, yeah.

[00:07:44] And then, this other person is the person that this other person was talking about the

[00:07:49] whole time.

[00:07:51] And, yeah.

[00:07:52] Like, I don't want to, I don't want to spoil any of that.

[00:07:54] It's best to just go in blind.

[00:07:58] And even some of the cameos.

[00:08:00] Like, I think I've already spoiled a whole bunch of the cameos.

[00:08:02] And they're not even, like, some of these aren't even cameos.

[00:08:05] Like, I say, like, um, I was in it.

[00:08:09] I forgot Seth Meyers was in this.

[00:08:11] Like, I, I watch, um, his A Closer Look, like, all the time.

[00:08:15] And he, like, he just, and that was a monologue, everyone?

[00:08:18] I watch that, like, all the time.

[00:08:21] And I'm a huge fan of his light show, uh, well, the monologues and the Closer Looks.

[00:08:28] So, I'm used to seeing him now.

[00:08:29] Like, he's got, like, the gray hair and he's older.

[00:08:31] And then, as soon as, like, his face popped up, I'm like, wait, is that Seth Meyers?

[00:08:36] He looks so young.

[00:08:38] Wow.

[00:08:39] And then he spoke.

[00:08:40] I'm like, that is Seth Meyers.

[00:08:43] I'm not used to seeing him acting in things.

[00:08:45] I know he was in SNL for the longest time.

[00:08:48] But, like, to actually see him in a movie, it was weird.

[00:08:51] It's like, I still watch Saturday Night Live.

[00:08:56] I'm a huge fan of Saturday Night Live.

[00:08:58] And I, like, uh, Bowen Yang.

[00:09:03] He's like, uh, I'm a big fan of Bowen Yang.

[00:09:05] And I went to go see Wicked and I didn't know he was in it.

[00:09:08] And then he, like, he popped up.

[00:09:11] He said something.

[00:09:12] I'm like, is that Bowen Yang?

[00:09:14] I'm watching Bowen Yang on the big screen.

[00:09:16] That's so unexpected.

[00:09:19] And, yeah.

[00:09:21] So, like, I'm used to seeing, like, some of these people on Saturday Night Live.

[00:09:26] And it's like, oh, I'm seeing him on my TV.

[00:09:29] And now I'm seeing him on the big screen in a movie, acting in a movie.

[00:09:34] And, I don't know.

[00:09:35] It's still kind of weird to me sometimes.

[00:09:37] Like, I know that, like, that's half the point of Saturday Night Live is to, you know, now, you know, I'm seen by millions of people every week.

[00:09:46] And now I'm going to have a whole other career being in movies.

[00:09:52] Like, I saw Colin Jost was in the Tom and Jerry movie a couple years ago.

[00:09:57] And I wasn't expecting that either.

[00:10:01] I didn't know he was in it before I watched it.

[00:10:04] And then, like, I watched it.

[00:10:06] And I don't know if he's that great of an actor.

[00:10:09] Because he was basically playing himself.

[00:10:12] Which, in this case, was not a good thing.

[00:10:14] Because he was just not reacting the way you would think.

[00:10:18] He was not really reacting.

[00:10:23] He's better on Weekend Update.

[00:10:25] I'll just put it there.

[00:10:29] Put it there!

[00:10:30] Or, I don't know.

[00:10:33] But, as for...

[00:10:35] As for this movie...

[00:10:37] Like I said, it is streaming on Hulu.

[00:10:41] And I do recommend it.

[00:10:45] But, yeah.

[00:10:48] Like I said, I don't want to say too much about this movie.

[00:10:51] Because all the reasons I said...

[00:10:54] I will end this here.

[00:10:55] I do have some announcements that I'm going to give.

[00:10:58] I'm going to save them for the mini-show that I do on New Year's Eve.

[00:11:04] Where I do the top 20 films of the year.

[00:11:09] I have some announcements.

[00:11:10] I'm going to wait until then.

[00:11:12] Just to say.

[00:11:14] Because...

[00:11:15] I have been avoiding discussing certain things in these episodes.

[00:11:21] This season.

[00:11:22] Because there have been things in the works.

[00:11:24] This season.

[00:11:25] And I just haven't talked about them.

[00:11:28] Because I'm like...

[00:11:28] It doesn't go into effect until next year.

[00:11:31] And New Year's Eve will be the time to discuss that.

[00:11:35] So...

[00:11:36] Until then.

[00:11:38] This will...

[00:11:39] This is the final full-length episode of Season 3 of Casabloga.

[00:11:45] Like I said, there is that mini-show coming up.

[00:11:48] New Year's Eve.

[00:11:50] So...

[00:11:51] Be on the lookout for that.

[00:11:55] And...

[00:11:57] Cut.
