Minisode 3: My Top 20 Films of 2024

[00:00:02] Yep, once again, it's not the end. The last episode of the season was a couple days ago, but there is still one more episode. It's actually a minisode, but I have a feeling this is going to be longer than a standard episode because of how last year went.

[00:00:19] And yeah, as the title suggests, this is my Top 20 Films of 2024. And like last year, it was really hard to decide. Like the number one film, I think anybody that knows me in real life is not in the least bit surprised what my number one film of 2024 was, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

[00:00:43] Everything else from 2 to 20, I was really conflicted on and I actually spent like the last week or so going through this list making it. And I'm still not 100% on it.

[00:00:58] Like if you get asked me in a week, what's your Top 20 Films? And I'll probably give you a completely different list, but the number one will still be the same.

[00:01:06] So currently, at the time of recording, my Top 20 Films of 2024 are...

[00:01:14] Number 20. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

[00:01:19] I'm not going to lie. I did see the original movie when I was a kid. I was more familiar with the animated show growing up.

[00:01:28] I didn't realize, I didn't know the story behind it. I thought the show was first and they made a movie out of the show.

[00:01:35] And then as I got older, I realized, you know, the movie came first and the show was based on the movie and, you know.

[00:01:42] But like I didn't have like that like major connection to it. It's just like it was a show that came on.

[00:01:47] It wasn't one of my favorite shows. It's like, oh, I, yeah, I liked it though.

[00:01:53] But I re-watched the movie when, like the day before.

[00:02:00] No, the day I went to go see Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice in theaters.

[00:02:04] I re-watched it.

[00:02:09] And, oh yeah, it's much better than I remember.

[00:02:11] For some reason, I remember when I watched the first time, I hated it.

[00:02:15] And that was, that was like 25 years ago, 20 years ago, I don't know, early 2000s, I think.

[00:02:21] And I hated it.

[00:02:22] And when I watched it this time, I was like, oh wow, why did I hate it? This movie is amazing.

[00:02:27] And then, so, you know, watching Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, it was not as good as the original.

[00:02:35] I, no, there's things I liked about it, things I didn't like about it.

[00:02:38] Uh, this, uh, this list will potentially go into spoilers.

[00:02:43] Some things I'll spoil, some things I won't on some movies.

[00:02:46] I don't know.

[00:02:47] I'll just kind of decide on the go.

[00:02:50] And, uh, this one, I, I didn't like the ending.

[00:02:59] I liked everything up until the ending.

[00:03:02] Because I had, like, a bunch of storylines going on.

[00:03:05] And I, I was excited.

[00:03:06] I, you know, give me a bunch of storylines.

[00:03:08] Don't just have, like, I mean, you can have, like, one storyline going throughout the whole thing.

[00:03:12] And, you know, that's fine.

[00:03:13] Just keep, you know, keep it focused.

[00:03:15] But you can also have multiple storylines going on.

[00:03:18] Keep it interesting.

[00:03:19] What I don't like was whenever, like, to solve those storylines, you do one quick, full swoop motion thing to solve everything.

[00:03:31] And, like, all these elements of these several different stories are, like, converging on this one location.

[00:03:38] And then, and just, like, just like that.

[00:03:41] Like, they're all solved by, like, the sandworm coming up and, like, eating everybody.

[00:03:46] And I'm like, oh, come on.

[00:03:48] Oh, you're going somewhere with that.

[00:03:52] And they really set up his ex-wife.

[00:03:55] Like, she was going to be this major threat.

[00:03:57] And, like, they, they, you know, the scene where she gets put back together.

[00:04:02] Like, you see in the trailer where she, like, stipples her face back together.

[00:04:05] That whole scene I love.

[00:04:07] They use tragedy by Bee Gees.

[00:04:09] And it was, like, it was a really great use of that scene.

[00:04:11] Like, the music, like, the great, that's a great use of that song.

[00:04:16] And, like, the way it's, like, the way it looked and everything, it just worked well.

[00:04:22] And she wasn't really used.

[00:04:24] I kept forgetting about her.

[00:04:25] And she popped up.

[00:04:25] I'm like, oh, yeah, she's in this movie.

[00:04:30] And, like, there's, you know, several different elements where, like, they pop up.

[00:04:34] And I think that is kind of a downside for this.

[00:04:38] Like, there are, there's a lot of storylines going on.

[00:04:41] But there's so many that whenever, you know, they don't focus on them too much.

[00:04:45] When they do pop up, you're like, oh, yeah, that's right.

[00:04:47] They're in this.

[00:04:48] And, like, I guess, like, the main focus is, you know, like,

[00:04:53] Jenna Ortega's character and what she's going through.

[00:04:57] Though not entirely because there's, like, they keep saying, like, I keep hearing people say the premise of it is, you know,

[00:05:03] she meets this guy who turns out to be dead.

[00:05:07] But, like, that's, I don't know if that's the premise.

[00:05:09] That's one of the storylines.

[00:05:11] And that, too, gets resolved, like, too quickly.

[00:05:13] They make it seem like, oh, this is going to be a major thing.

[00:05:16] We're going this way.

[00:05:17] But then that gets, that gets resolved quickly.

[00:05:20] It's like, oh, okay, that was, that was a nothing storyline.

[00:05:26] Now, if I could follow this movie with one thing.

[00:05:27] It is, like, they had, they had so many ideas.

[00:05:30] And I guess in the writer's room, they were like, okay, we have all these ideas for a story.

[00:05:35] Which one are we going to use?

[00:05:36] And the answer was yes.

[00:05:39] And so, but, like, I did like it.

[00:05:42] Like, enough to put it on my top 20 films of 2024.

[00:05:45] I just realized I didn't preface this by explaining.

[00:05:49] Like, last year, I, last year I watched 51 movies.

[00:05:54] I have AMCA List.

[00:05:56] So, that gives you, you know, with, with AMCA List, you're able to watch three movies a week for free.

[00:06:03] It's 12 movies a month.

[00:06:04] And I take advantage of it.

[00:06:07] Last year, I saw 51 movies.

[00:06:09] This year, I've seen, well, I saw, you know, I'm not seeing any more the rest of the year.

[00:06:17] I saw 53 movies.

[00:06:21] Correction, while editing, I saw 73 movies this year.

[00:06:26] Not 53.

[00:06:28] My number one movie I saw five times.

[00:06:32] So, I've been to the theater 77 times this year alone.

[00:06:37] Because AMCA List.

[00:06:38] And I narrowed that 73 films down to 20.

[00:06:43] And that's how I came to this.

[00:06:44] So, like, I didn't see every single movie that came out.

[00:06:47] I saw most of the big blockbusters and a bunch of indie films.

[00:06:53] So, like, there's probably a movie that came out this year that, if I had seen it, would have been my greatest movie of all time.

[00:07:01] It's not on here because I didn't see it.

[00:07:03] And so, like, I might watch it in a few years and be like, oh, wow, I should have seen that when it came out.

[00:07:10] Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.

[00:07:12] I'm already digressing.

[00:07:17] And I'm on the first entry.

[00:07:19] Number 19.

[00:07:22] Twisters.

[00:07:24] This one, on the other hand, is unlike Beetlejuice.

[00:07:26] I did see.

[00:07:27] I did see the original.

[00:07:29] I grew up with this movie, Twister.

[00:07:33] And I was afraid that, you know, I kind of wanted Helen Hunt to be in this film.

[00:07:39] There was rumors that the main character of this was the daughter of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.

[00:07:49] But at the same time, it's like, are we doing the whole legacy sequel thing?

[00:07:54] Because, like, it's been done.

[00:07:56] I mean, yeah, I want that, but I also don't want that, you know.

[00:08:00] And so there was a scene when, you know, she's going to...

[00:08:03] I think the creators knew.

[00:08:06] I think the filmmakers knew that people would think this.

[00:08:09] Because the scene where you meet her mother, she's like, oh, mother, there you are.

[00:08:12] And then she's in shadow.

[00:08:14] And she slowly steps out.

[00:08:15] And it's not Helen Hunt.

[00:08:17] And I could hear the audience at my theater laughed.

[00:08:21] Because, like, they all knew.

[00:08:22] We were all like, oh, is it Helen Hunt?

[00:08:24] And, like, the silhouette kind of looked like Helen Hunt.

[00:08:27] And she stepped out and was someone completely different.

[00:08:29] And I was like, oh.

[00:08:30] I was relieved but disappointed at the same time.

[00:08:34] It was one of those things where, like, we all wanted it but we didn't.

[00:08:38] And, like, I'm kind of glad that we didn't get it.

[00:08:41] Make it its own standalone thing.

[00:08:46] And I did like it.

[00:08:48] It's, uh...

[00:08:49] It kind of played with the first one's premise a little bit.

[00:08:55] Where you have, like, the bad guy storm chaser.

[00:09:00] And, you know, you got, like, you know, the good guy storm chasers and the bad guy storm chasers.

[00:09:07] And they all do their own thing.

[00:09:09] And the bad guy storm chasers are chasing the good guys.

[00:09:12] And, you know, they stay on their own separate thing.

[00:09:14] In this one, I thought it was going to be...

[00:09:16] I thought it was just going to be cut and paste.

[00:09:18] You know, just with new effects.

[00:09:20] Maybe a couple of extra scenes.

[00:09:21] Like, in the trailer with, like, the oil refinery exploding.

[00:09:25] I'm like, okay, that's different.

[00:09:26] We got twins!

[00:09:28] Which, that's...

[00:09:28] I think that's in the first one.

[00:09:31] Like...

[00:09:33] Um...

[00:09:33] But it wasn't like that.

[00:09:35] It turns out that the bad guy storm chaser wasn't the bad guy storm chaser.

[00:09:41] Turns out the good guy storm chaser was the bad guy storm chaser.

[00:09:47] They kind of did the bait and switch with us.

[00:09:49] And I liked it.

[00:09:50] Oh, okay.

[00:09:51] That's not what I thought it was going to be.

[00:09:57] It was a similar story.

[00:09:59] But different enough...

[00:10:14] Because I know a lot of people hate it.

[00:10:16] At this point, I think it's just popular to hate M. Night Shyamalan.

[00:10:25] Like, he was starting to get still there.

[00:10:27] And I...

[00:10:27] I've refused to watch his movies.

[00:10:29] I haven't seen...

[00:10:30] This is the first one of his movies I've seen...

[00:10:35] I don't even remember the last time I had seen one.

[00:10:42] Like, I saw The Happening in theaters.

[00:10:46] And then I saw The Happening.

[00:11:13] It got me to go see M. Night in theaters again.

[00:11:18] I will have to say that this was the first good M. Night movie that I've seen since The Happening.

[00:11:26] That sounds really bad.

[00:11:27] I really liked it.

[00:11:28] It was good enough to be on this list.

[00:11:31] And I know a lot of people hate it.

[00:11:33] Because they say, oh, it's just...

[00:11:37] It was just a way for him to market his daughter as a singer.

[00:11:40] And put her in the movie.

[00:11:42] It was to launch her career.

[00:11:44] Or, like, whatever.

[00:11:46] But I don't mind that, honestly.

[00:11:50] If I was a big-time director and I had a daughter and she was in a singer...

[00:13:18] And then, you know, he's gonna go...

[00:13:19] Like, he went to go to the concession stand or whatever.

[00:13:24] He sees the...

[00:13:25] You know, he sees...

[00:13:26] The police everywhere.

[00:13:27] And he's like, hey, what's going on?

[00:13:29] And the guy's like...

[00:13:30] Hey, yeah, I'm not supposed to say anything.

[00:13:32] But, you know, that serial killer.

[00:13:34] You know, he...

[00:13:35] Yeah, there...

[00:13:35] You know...

[00:13:36] There's a rumor that he's here.

[00:13:37] And this is a trap for him.

[00:13:49] He's the serial killer.

[00:13:56] I just love the premise of it.

[00:14:04] The cops in this movie are just so...

[00:14:10] Well, like, cops in real life, I guess, for the most part.

[00:14:15] Because, like, they're looking for him.

[00:14:17] And, you know...

[00:14:18] I think in real life, this movie would never happen.

[00:14:21] Because, like, he's just freely walking.

[00:14:25] Like...

[00:14:25] They have a basic description of the suspect.

[00:14:30] And he looks like this guy.

[00:14:32] And he's very minimally disguised.

[00:14:37] And he's just freely walking around.

[00:14:39] And he's going, like, between...

[00:14:41] And, like, behind...

[00:14:43] Like, the police line where he's not supposed to.

[00:14:45] Like, where the public doesn't go.

[00:14:47] He goes to, like...

[00:14:49] One of the...

[00:14:49] Like, a police meeting backstage.

[00:14:53] And then, like...

[00:14:54] He pretends, like...

[00:14:55] Oh, he works there.

[00:14:57] And he's just, like...

[00:14:58] Getting coffee.

[00:15:00] A cop's coffee.

[00:15:03] And they're just like...

[00:17:57] This needs to be addressed more.

[00:17:59] In the mainstream.

[00:20:20] Which is a Christian group.
